Glenlivet 1949 74 Years Old (Gordon & Macphail)
Gordon & MacPhail has added a 74-year-old whisky from The Glenlivet to its Private Collection range. A special collection of rare Scotch whiskey wines that have been aged long-term glenlivet 1949 74 years.
Dave Broom said of the whisky: “To find a whisky of this age is absolutely extraordinary. What comes across immediately is the fruit – there’s richness and there’s depth. You have this wonderful interplay of distillery character, of oak and oxygen. It’s a gift that keeps on giving.” His is one of the oldest The Glenlivet bottles ever released by Gordon & MacPhail – and will be the last bottle produced in 1949 from the Speyside distillery.
Ewen Mackintosh, managing director at Gordon & MacPhail, said: “Patience, knowledge, skill, and a commitment to quality are all principles exemplified in this greatly aged single malt. Gordon & MacPhail 1949 from Glenlivet Distillery is extremely scarce – our very last cask of Glenlivet from 1949, making it a must for whisky enthusiasts looking to savour a remarkable greatly aged single malt exuding layers of character and decades of maturation expertise.”
Glenlivet 1949 74 years was aged in sherry barrels on January 1, 1949, spent more than seven decades quietly ripening until March 6, 2023, with only 192 bottles released. This single-dental circuit has an ABV concentration of 49.3% and is extracted from the company’s last 1949 wine barrel, making it even more rare because no more 1949 factory versions will be released.
At the same time, according to Gordon and Macphail’s latest announcement, they’ve made an important decision to stop bottling whiskey from distilleries which they don’t own. This crucial choice marked the end of Gordon and Macphail’s 128-year term that it would stop filling new casks for independent bottlings in 2024 to instead focus on spirits from its two distilleries, Benromach and The Cairn, and is said to be one of the most important decisions the brand has made recently. That’s why the Glenlivet edition of 1949 was 74 years old as a major milestone in the reign of Gordon and Macphail, and became a rare edition that made many collectors seek to add to their own collections.
