On the occasion of its 200th anniversary, The Macallan proudly introduces the Time
collection as a tribute to the past and the future. The Macallan has released several remarkable editions to commemorate its 200th anniversary in 2024. However, none are as spectacular as The Macallan TIME
Collection, which includes the oldest Scotch whisky ever produced, with an astonishing age of 84 years. The Macallan TIME Collection comprises two unique editions. The first edition is TIME with only 200 sets. The second edition is TIME Mastery.
Inspired by the 200-year milestone, The Macallan has created a world where time flows and nature protects the most precious things. The Macallan 84 years old is an extremely rare whisky aged for over eight decades; it is the oldest whisky ever released by The Macallan.
The first edition, called Time:SPACE , features a decanter witha dual-chamber. The outer chamber contains the oldest whisky distilled by The Macallan in 1940, aged 84 years. Symbolizing the past, this whisky was matured in two casks: a first-fill American oak cask and a second-fill European oak cask—both sherry casks from Jerez de la Frontera and matured in Speyside, Scotland. Bottled at an ABV of 43.6%, the 84-year maturation brings rich natural color as well as a rounded, long-lasting flavor typical of this rare single malt whisky. It possesses aromas of charred pineapple and roasted peach, accented with ginger, star anise, raspberry jam, and oak smoke, along with a resinous sweetness mingling with caramel, interlaced with dark chocolate notes in the finish.
In the central chamber is a second single malt whisky marking the first whisky from Macallan’s new distillery, distilled in 2018. The 5-year-old whisky offers rich flavors of golden grapes and baked apples on the palate, interspersed with buttery cake. This is followed by notes of lemon and lime, along with vanilla butter cookies. The finish is moderate, creamy, and sweet from the oak.
The decanter is displayed in a specially crafted wooden sculpture, designed to highlight the 100% natural color of the whisky with layers of American oak and European oak, honoring The Macallan’s commitment to using sherry casks. Only 200 bottles were produced, each representing a year of The Macallan’s history. This whisky symbolizes the brand’s interpretation of time travel, featuring the aged whisky distilled in 1940 and the youthful version from 2018.
The second edition, Time Mastery, is a unique single malt whisky known for its complex layers of flavor, preserving the 200-year history of the brand. The whisky was matured in 14 oak casks, providing multiple layers of complex aromas, textures, and deep flavors.
Euan Kennedy, the master whisky maker of Time Mastery, stated, “Inspired by the masters before us, we explored our entire inventory to capture the complex flavor influences of the casks, the source of the oak, cask size, and the characteristics of the distillery in a truly special whisky—elegantly centered on European oak.”
With whisky sourced from The Macallan’s reserves, this product has a distinct influence from European sherry oak casks, American sherry oak casks, American bourbon casks, and the finest refill oak casks from the distillery. Together, the whiskies from the aging casks deliver layers of complexity and depth in aroma, flavor, and texture. On the nose, the whisky presents aromas of Medjool dates, sweet roasted figs, and rich milk chocolate, accompanied by honey and delicate tropical fruit, along with orange jam and honey on the palate.
The whisky is housed in a round hand-crafted decanter symbolizing the circle of life and the continuous journey from the past to the future. In contrast to the refined exterior, the packaging “shows vibrancy” with a brilliant red color—characteristic of The Macallan—and the 200 bottles produced symbolize the brand’s 200th anniversary.
