“It is my pleasure to donate this rare piece of Scotch Whisky history to raise funds towards helping improve the lives of young people in Scotland. I enjoyed recalling the events of the Queen’s visit to Bowmore and bringing my memories back to life in the letter accompanying the bottle.” – S. W. Morrison.
On August 9th 1980, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II paid her first ever visit to a Scotch whisky distillery. This visit was to one of the oldest and most prestigious distilleries in Scotland – the Bowmore distillery on Islay. The distillery was founded in 1779 and purchased by Stanley P. Morrison in 1963. In honour of the occasion of the royal visit, a number of casks were filled, one Sherry Butt which was gifted to Her Majesty, and five Hogsheads – one for each of the Directors of Morrison Bowmore Distillers. On that day S. W. Morrison was gifted Cask No. 5733 and this special cask has since remained in his private collection.
