BALVENIE (55 YEAR OLD) 1961
In 1962, David C. Stewart began work as an apprentice at William Grant & Sons. Some 55 years later, he’s celebrating a truly impressive legacy as malt master at the Balvenie distillery in the whisky-producing region of Speyside, after many years as malt master for all William Grant & Sons operations. So to celebrate his career, Balvenie has been releasing five sets of five different single cask whiskies every year, as part of the DCS Compendium series. The third release, the DCS Compedium Chapter 3 “Secrets of the Stock Model,” has just been unveiled.
- A limited edition to commorate 55 years at Balvenie of David C. Stewart.
Balvenie 1961 of the set is the Balvenie’s oldest-ever release available to the public, this 55-year-old whisky matured in a sherry oloroso hogshead cask. It was originally distilled on June 14, 1961, and bottled two days before it turned 56 years old.
Balvenie 1961 is limited to only 15 bottles and are supplied in the UK and Taiwan. A cherry wood frame, featuring a premium European brass trim designed specifically for the Balvenie 1961 edition, highlights the rarity of this whiskey bottle. All are completely handcrafted by Scottish artist Sam Chinnery.
- Rich taste.
Balvenie 1961 aged in a European oak oloroso sherry hogshead. Orange marmalade and lanolin on the nose, with caramel and candle wax dripped onto old leather. Full-bodied, with slightly bitter orange notes, plus nutmeg and aniseed on the palate. The orange theme persists into the finish as dried-out Jaffa segments, plus edgy oak tannins. A highly individualistic Balvenie.
Balvenie 1961 is an extremely rare limited edition, so it is difficult to own this bottle.
