North British 60 Year Old One of One
“As the Eleventh Managing Director of the company since its incorporation in 1885, it is my great pleasure to offer this unique bottle of 60 year-old North British Single Grain Whisky. I sincerely hope that it contributes strongly to the life chances of Scotland’s disadvantaged young people.” – Alan J S Kilpatrick.
This truly one of one bottle of North British 60-year-old Single Grain Scotch Whisky is provided by the distiller. The whisky was distilled in 1960 on the same Edinburgh site as the company commenced production in 1887 and still does to this day. It was drawn from a cask yet to be bottled and placed in specifically designed packaging that will not be repeated. This bottle is unlike anything in the company’s long history spanning three centuries.
It is big, fresh, round, and rivetingly sweet as the nose opens, ahead of an array of intriguing spices with a heft of cereal and cream, as well as a late treacle effect. Anticipate a mouth-watering, oily, quality early on the palate, with not a hint of oak; but a concentrate of sweet Bourbon type corn and vanilla flavours amongst an upcoming gristy, nutty and (maple) syrupy backdrop. That same maple is distinct on its surprisingly long finish, with a later tail amalgamating butterscotch, candies, vanilla fudge, and the gentlest of spices.
The North British Distillery was established in 1885 on the western outskirts of Edinburgh by Andrew Usher, William Sanderson and John Crabbie and has been distilling since 1887. The three businessmen, all independent blenders and sellers of their own whisky brands, joined forces to build and operate a distillery that supplied their own grain spirit. Financed by the trade for the trade, the distillery ran under a cooperative agreement for the next hundred years.
