Very rare offering from the Balvenie Distillery makes auction debut
The Balvenie Private Cask Trunk is exactly that—and even more.
Each of the ten bottles are contained with a carved wooden presentation case fixed with brass tube hinges. The solid oak trunk is laser engraved and gold glided with the cask number and The Balvenie logo.
The whisky comes from a single cask—Sherry Butt #16560
which was filled in 1970 and dumped from the barrel in 2020, just 10 days short of when the whisky would have turned 51 years old at 57.1 percent ABV (impressive for a single malt this old).
To complete this project, The Balvenie commissioned award-winning Scottish artist Paul Furneaux to create specially designed labels for the entire collection from the actual oak staves., which consists of 220 bottles in total.
This artwork was inspired by The Balvenie’s Cooperage—a dedicated in-house facility that allows the distillery to maintain exceptional quality and creativity in cask selection.
Furneaux used oak slats from Sherry Butt and he employed traditional lithography techniques to make paint imprints on canvas, capturing colors and hues that evoke the Speyside landscape surrounding the distillery.
Each individual detail from this original piece was then used to craft a one-of-a-kind label, making every bottle a true piece of artisanal craftsmanship.
