1 Bottle 1 Story : Rhum Ancienne 1772

Despite the advent of the internet and the ease of knowing almost everything about everything, some mysteries remain—still—well-kept. A prime example is this Ancienne 1772 rum, which appeared out of nowhere: no one was aware of its existence until its name came up in a random Google search. Only one article even mentions it, the one in Forbes magazine published in June 2025. Aside from that, nothing else to go on. How can such an old, and by definition iconic, rum still fly under the radar?

“I didn’t find this rum, it found me,” its owner confided. A possible explanation? “In the world of collecting, and especially in the world of spirits, some bottles never appear on the market and have no official price,” added Mr. Viet. Spirits (off the radar) that ultimately belong to no one in the conventional sense, remaining secretly hidden in dusty old cellars, in the shadow of history.

As enthusiasts, we might lament this parallel world where players manipulate the rules and appropriate pieces of history; but when the transgression is officially acknowledged, what a source of wonder it is to discover a new bottle that alters—and pushes back—the course of time a little further! After all, who hasn’t felt a sense of awe seeing those bottles of Harewood 1780 slumbering on the shelves, literally besieged by dust and mold? The rum that brings us here, however, has not had the same fate… While bottles of Harewood rum were found (and sold) in batches, Ancienne rum is unique in that only one bottle has been discovered (and presumably preserved) to this day.

Its vintage, 1772, in addition to being eight years older than its predecessor, plunges us into another era: that of royalty and a certain Louis XV, that of the American Revolution, that of Goya at the height of his powers, of the mastery of the child prodigy Mozart, and so many other momentous events that, besides making us dizzy, make us feel so small…

And what about the trials this simple bottle of rum had to endure to reach us, at the end of its journey, in Vietnam? (Standing only about twenty centimeters tall) It has survived several world wars and so many upheavals that it’s incredible it survived this long, until that fateful day in March 2024, the date of its unveiling. And its sale…

Record upon record

In addition to being officially recognized as the oldest rum in the world, Ancienne 1772 also holds the record for the highest price ever paid at a private auction: it was sold on March 6, 2024, in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, for the staggering sum of €270,000 (£230,831, or $293,023).

But how did such an old bottle survive to this day, as pristine as the day it was first sold?

“The survival of this bottle to this day is nothing short of a miracle”, “I first learned of its existence through a series of fragmented pieces of information from several European collectors.” The kind of collectors who, as you might have guessed, never, ever publicly reveal what they own.

“When I finally had the opportunity to access it, what astonished me was not only its age—over 253 years old—but also its remarkable state of preservation: the glassware still reflected 18th-century craftsmanship, the seal remained intact, and the history had been passed down through generations of the Sabatier family…”

Which brings us directly, and without transition, to the origins of this rum.

From 1772 to the present day: over 250 years in obscurity

This unique piece has thus survived the centuries through the Sabatier family, a line of physicians associated with the French intellectual elite of the late 18th century. The collar provides more precise information about the identity of a member of this noble family: a certain Monsieur B. Sabatier…

This is Raphaël Bienvenu Sabatier, born in Paris on October 11, 1732. He became a physician at the age of twenty and quickly rose to the rank of professor of anatomy. He was also chief surgeon at the Hôtel des Invalides, professor at the Faculty of Medicine in Paris, a member of the Legion of Honor and the Institut de France, and even, remarkably, a consultant to Napoleon I. Writings describe him as simple, frugal, humane, and full of compassion for the sick. Afflicted by an acute illness in the first days of June 1811, he succumbed on July 19 of the same year at the age of seventy-nine. He is buried in Paris at the Père-Lachaise Cemetery.

As was undoubtedly the custom in the bourgeoisie of the time, wine tasting was a pastime like any other, a proper and obligatory activity. Raphaël Bienvenu Sabatier was no exception, and he likely kept numerous wines and spirits in his personal cellar, of which this Ancienne rum stands out as a true survivor. We haven’t seen the documents that Mr. Viet carefully preserves, but it is said that Dr. Sabatier had a passion for spirits, and rum in particular. After his death, his collection was passed down through several generations before ending up in the hands of some rather meticulous collectors, judging by the impeccable condition of the bottle we have here. Tracing the origin of this rum would be a lost cause, and unfortunately, no information is known to date, even though one might logically assume it came from the French West Indies, given its name, “Ancienne” (Old), but this is pure speculation…

To reconstruct the history of a rum that waited over 250 years before literally revealing itself to the world, Nguyen Dinh Tuan Viet relied not only on documents, but also—as is so often the case—on the bottle itself. By analyzing the glass, the labels, and the seal, and then cross-referencing information gathered from historians and spirits experts, he was able to gradually piece together evidence from previous generations of owners. For him, “Every detail, however small, contributes to a complete ‘chronicle of rum,’ where history, culture, and art intersect.”

“If you have the chance to examine it closely, you can fully appreciate the meticulous craftsmanship evident on the surface of the bottle, created by artisans of the time. The bottle’s somewhat rustic shape enhances its charm with a distinctly classic feel, accentuated by a carefully handwritten label. The cracked seal and the rusted metal label, detailing the bottle’s ‘mysterious’ contents, add to its appeal.”

“Finding a single, unique version of the oldest rum in the world would be a daunting task, even for the most seasoned experts. It is therefore an honor that this version is currently being produced in Vietnam.”

And what does he plan to do with this precious relic?

“I am planning a project to elevate this bottle to a whole new level, transforming it into a work of spiritual and artistic significance, so that its story is not only told with words, but also experienced visually and emotionally—at a level of sophistication never before seen.”

We eagerly await the next chapter, and the outcome, of this mysterious promise. And in the meantime, who knows, perhaps a new bottle of rum will break a new record? Never say never…
